Planet Postmoderna Background Story (V 11.2009)
In the not too distant future in the alternate and virtual universe of Entropia, New Worlds Virtual Entertainment and Expeditions was enroute to Calypso to set up a new Virtual Entertainment facility in Port Atlantis. Somewhere along its route, the transport and cargo vessel was pulled out of its trans-space jump by a space anomaly. The anomaly turned out to be an uncharted and most unstable wormhole. When the ship approached it, the wormhole looked like a tear in space with a planet visible on the other side. The crew proceeded to investigate it and fired off a probe to get some additional readings from the other side of the tear. When no immediate danger could be detected, the ship proceeded forward but found the tear too small to pass through. The crew decided instead to send a few survey team shuttles through it.
The new world they found was an blue and green planet with vast oceans and dense forests. The land masses were very spread out but expansive. Some were dotted with what looked like small piles of white pepper from space. What the crew later learned about these formations was the piles were dense and very strong rock.
A reconnaissance party was sent planet-side to perform some initial surveys. The teams returned not long after to report finding a great place to land and set up a survey base. It was a lush green crater formation that would make a well protected landing and base area. When the team made their report to HQ the New Worlds Corp Offices wasted no time getting back to the transport, Black Venture, with insistent plans for the teams to explore the planet further. HQ had determined overwhelmingly by the data they received that this planet would merit more study. They felt it would be just the location they needed for the corporation’s New World Adventure Theme Project, a tourism and entertainment hub for this area of space. Although unknown to all but the key personnel, that was just a cover. This planet would also serve as a secluded location for the further experimentation and advancement of New World’s technologies, developed far from prying eyes.
The crew sent a pair of heavy lifters to the surface to put down an expandable tower and a few domed structures that would comprise the initial base of operations. Upon their return, the space tear collapsed and crushed one of the heavy lifters as it passed through. The second one had to return back to Base Camp. Further supplies had to be sent down to the planet’s surface by way of transport pods, retrofitted to carry people as well. These were only large enough to contain a 2-3 crew members and minor supplies and equipment. Unfortunately, they were not designed to be retrieved so when the Black Venture ran out of the pods and all the initial survey data had been compiled it had to return home.
As the survey teams began their exploration of the planet they found a few things very curious, artifacts and structures that resembled those from Ancient Mexico, both Aztec and Mayan in appearance. Coincidence? The crew also discovered a mysterious crystalline mineral in a canyon not far from Base Camp. The crystals were nearly unbreakable and emitted and absorbed energy like a battery. The crystals grew dark by day and glowed at night like powerful light sources. What was this place they now called Planet Postmoderna?
It did not take long for HQ, after learning of these things, to send supply convoys and cargo vessels busting at the seams with supply pods to bring enough workers and materials to finish the first base and continue exploration of this new planet. Of course, HQ had big plans for this place. For its research, HQ sent scientists and its finest security forces to protect its discoveries. To build its profit margins, New Worlds encouraged tourism and promoted adventurers to visit along with a very high price tag.
Far from the inquisitive minds of New Worlds’ tourists and adventurers however, lay deeper mysteries on the planet. Throughout the land and within the network of subterranean caverns and tunnels were signs that this place may have been used by an ancient people for bio/mineral experimentation. This discovery was aggressively covered up by New Worlds Corporate. No one else could discover this. They not only knew that this news would scare away the tourists and explorers but it might unmask the organizations hidden activities. In contrast though, New Worlds was elated by the discoveries of the new technologies their scientists were uncovering and what it could mean to their military shareholders.
There was growing evidence that this planet had been inhabited by beings somehow connected with the vanished civilizations of Earth and many more others. These creatures seemed to, when at the height of their civilization, manipulate nature and space itself. They could travel long distances without spacecraft using planetary alignments and some kind of link between them. The problem was that some of these doorways would remain open only for a few hundred years and then closed for thousands more before they could be reopened again.
These beings also created creatures, plant life, structures and machines that were a blend of mineral and organic. But, what life that has been since discovered on Postmoderna seemed no more than primitive. These creatures could not have possibly engineered these mysterious alien technologies or have been been able to explore space. So where did the advanced creatures go?
New Worlds scientists learned more about that ancient markings and written languages they discovered. The found they resembled the ancient text from areas on Earth like Central and South America, Africa, and ancient Greece. New Worlds spared no expense to bring in specialists to translate the text. Some could be deciphered and other could not and that, just deepened the mystery. Some of these other texts were unlike anything the scientists have seen before.
Once the chance of any potential threat was ruled out New Worlds made it possible for people to visit some of the ancient ruins and to further explore the now opened terrain–at least the parts that New Worlds wanted them to see. HQ creatively disguised classified areas with intricate arrays using its signature holographic technology. If a tourist got to close to these areas, New Worlds’ Security details would further discourage them by concocting a creative story about dangerous materials spills or potential radioactive exposure or something much more creative.
As this story develops, we will see that the creatures native to Postmoderna, the Zilthai (means Shadow of God), will stop at nothing to protect their knowledge when they return to find new hosts on one of their pet planets.
Player Background and Intro
RL players can come to this world to learn about and to experience an altered version of history and are given the opportunity to pursue the answers to their questions (eg. What really happened to the Aztecs and to Atlantis? How were those pyramids built? What is the significance of Stonehenge?). What connection does Postmoderna have to Earth and this Space Sector? Is it just pure coincidence or something else? Be careful though. What you think might just be another futile attempt to retell a burnt out scifi idea will instead be an adventure like no other that you will experience firsthand as you play an integral part in its development.
If you are an explorer at heart and yearn for adventure and knowledge of the unknown, come to Postmoderna. If you just want to have fun, come one come all and establish a new way of life in a getaway location that takes you from the real world and doesn’t require you to get on a plane or a bus or a train (or will it?). We may even tease you with quests complete with rewards that may treat you to adventure or place of relaxation in the real world when you return from Postmoderna. How? Come and find out. Come and experience life in Postmoderna.
